In a brightly-lit studio in Santa Monica College’s (SMC) Core Performance Center, female students line up in front of a bank of mirrors to stretch, warming up for a rigorous hour and a half of self-defense instruction. The 16-week, one-credit course meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, and teaches students practical, hands-on methods to protect themselves from assault.

Santa Monica Hosts the City's 3rd Annual Denim Day Event to Commemorate the Campaign's 20th Anniversary

On the evening of April 24, people flocked to Santa Monica City Hall decked in denim jackets, jeans and t-shirts. This crowd’s matching attire was no coincidence; all arrived to attend the city’s third annual Denim Day gathering. Santa Monica’s event was organized by the Commission on the Status of Women and included a multitude of speakers, performances and tabling by various sexual violence activist groups.

Plans for a Café at the CMD Hit a Snag

The room sits empty and bleak in the middle of a vibrant campus. The walls are stripped bare. The floor is unfinished. In the far corner of the room, a lone volleyball lies abandoned. The space was supposed to house a café for students, faculty, and staff. Instead, the empty grayness stands in sharp contrast to the bright yellows, oranges, and greens that make up Santa Monica College's (SMC) newest campus, the Center for Media and Design (CMD).
