‘My House Burned Down’: capturing an artists experience with disaster
After losing their home in the Eaton fire, artist Camilla Taylor curated an exhibition made up of just artists whose houses have burned down. “My House Burned Down”, located at Track 16 in Downtown LA, hosts 8 different artists, 4 who lost their home in the recent LA fires and 4 who have lost their home from fires in the past. Taylor explores themes of loss, destruction and grief, as well as what happens when you have nothing left.

The SMC community speaks about their thoughts on the recent deportation of student Tony Lopez by ICE
On May 5, U.S. ICE detained SMC student Tony Lopez who was then deported to Mexico. Corsair reporter Jared Blair talked with students to get their reaction and incoming AS president Ailsa Ortiz shared what resources are available to all students. These include red cards which explain your constitutional rights if ICE agents show up. These can be found at the student services building. This video was filmed before the current protests that are taking place in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for more coverage.

Fighting food waste through the Santa Monica College Bodega
According to the US Department of Agriculture 30-40 percent of the food supply is wasted each year, amounting to 133 billion pounds of food waste. Pasquale Galante is a 78 year old SMC Student and wants to do something about that. He spends his time “rescuing” foods from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown out and donating it to people and places in need.
One such place is the SMC Bodega, which is a free food pantry for all SMC students. Learn more about the Bodega, where it gets its food, and the people working to stop food waste and get people the food they need.

Heal the Bay

2024 Associated Students Election Forum - hosted by The Corsair
The event, moderated by Corsair Editor-in-Chief Cebelihle Hlatshwayo, featured a dynamic conversation with the candidates vying for positions in the upcoming Associated Students Election. Held on Thursday, March 28th, from 11:15 to 12:30, at the Orientation Hall in the Student Services Center, the event provided an insightful glimpse into the aspirations and visions of the candidates for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Santa Monica's "Locals' Night" on the third Thursday of each month is curated with the intention to attract Santa Monica natives and locals," and refers to the classic cars, vendors and entertainment groups who are all either based in or have ties to Santa Monica.
