Brie Larson plays Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers, in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release. It has had the second highest Marvel opening weekend box office earnings, second only to Black Panther. This has been the highest earning opening for a female lead comic book movie, surpassing even D.C. Comics’ Wonder Woman.

In the first moments of the film, the Marvel Studios Opening logo and intro were customized into a heartwarming tribute honoring the late Stan Lee. This was well received by the audience with a round of applause; it was Lee’s 21st Marvel Film. He was also able to complete Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, before his death on November 12, 2018.

Lee’s cameos are always highlights in Marvel films and this Captain Marvel cameo is a very special one. Lee is on a train reading a script from the 90’s movie Mallrats. A genuine moment of connection is presented when Captain Marvel crosses his path during a scene set on a metro train.

The movie takes place in 1995 with Larson as the first female superhero lead in a Marvel movie. The cast includes: Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division) agent Phil Coulson, and Jude Law as villain Yon-Rogg.

This is the origin story of Carol Danvers becoming Captain Marvel. The super hero has dreams that she doesn't realize are flashes of her past life. She soon finds out she had a full life that she doesn't remember. She is a more casual type of character having a different sense of humor and an adventurous personality without losing her strong sense of loyalty, and a certain gentleness. She also may be the most powerful being in the MCU.

This film also gives us much wanted insight into the early days of Nick Fury, his work with S.H.I.E.L.D. and his infamous eye-patch. And of course the cat that steals the show. Goose, played by Reggie the cat, is a key role in this film.

Don’t miss the two mid/post credit sequences, one set in the past and one set in the future of the MCU present day.

This is the first MCU film musically scored by a woman composer, Pinar Toprak. It was also written and directed by a woman, Anna Boden, along with director and writer Ryan Fleck.

Larson will also return as Captain Marvel alongside “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” in Avengers: Endgame scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.
