Associated Students Spring 2022 Candidate Guide

A.S elections have started and will end April 7 at 11:59 pm. Get to know the students running for A.S. before you vote.

A.S. President Candidates

  • Kamiko Greenwood is the current A.S. Director of Student Advocacy. She is now running for A.S. President with the goal of helping SMC students by listening to their concerns, advocating for them, and giving them a voice. She is in the Slate "The Student Advocates.”

  • Olivia Taha is the current ICC Representative as well as the ICC Vice Chair for the Eco-Action Club. As an A.S. presidential candidate she wants to “ensure a better communication flow between A.S. and our students so that students can express their concerns or needs more effectively.”


A.S. Secretary Candidate

  • Denise Lui is running for for A.S. Secretary with prior experience in being a secretary for her high school. Her goal is to be a ““channel of communication” between students and SMC. "I am not only the Secretary of A.S., but I am also your friend who gives you support anytime in anywhere."

A.S. Director of Budget Management Candidate

  • Tabassum Raisa is running for A.S. Director of Budget Management. She is a part of a slate with Kamiko Greenwood who is running for A.S. President. She vows to follow policy to put students’ interests first. “I want to help the community of SMC and I consider myself a good team player and open-minded person. A.S. Director of Instructional Support Candidate

  • Ananya Iyer is an SMC Student Tutor running for Director of Instructional Support. She says “It is important that as a school we make it our priority to establish an instructional support system that is more accessible and inclusive to all.”

A.S. Director of Equity and Diversity Candidates

  • Alyssa Arreola is running for the Director of Equity and Diversity. She has a background in high school clubs centering mental health and social justice. She says that “ultimately, my main goal is for everyone to know your voice matters, your thoughts matter, and you deserve to be heard.”

  • Esmeralda Hernandez is running as an independent candidate for Director of Equity and Diversity. She is a member of SMC’s Adelante club, as well as a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing “cultural awareness of the Indigenous people of Mexico called Oaxaca through our dances.” She says “I’ve always wanted to make a difference in my community.”

  • Yanette Beas is running as an independent candidate for Director of Equity and Diversity. She says she chose Political Science as a major in order to create change through policy. “I also believe that people who live in underserved communities deserve to have the opportunity to thrive and have the American dream,” she says.

A.S Director of Student Advocacy Candidate

  • Tyrel Deverya is running uncontested for A.S Director of Student Advocacy. He has served on the committee for Institutional Effectiveness and has worked with A.S before. Deverya hopes to represent the voice of the student body, in particular, the voice of marginalized and underrepresented students. “I believe true and meaningful advocacy is centered on compassion, awareness, and direct action.” Deverya said.

A.S Director of Publicity Candidate

  • Chloe Heo is running as an independent candidate for the A.S Director of Publicity position. She is a Communications major hoping to gain experience for her major before transferring. “I want to make students more aware about it, about their student relations, events and social media.”

A.S Director of Sustainability Candidate

  • Forest McClendon is campaigning for A.S Director of Sustainability. He believes sustainable practices will save the world. He promises to educate people on sustainable practices, promote conservation of the planet’s resources, and create sustainable solutions to environmental issues. “Being a disabled student elected to the A.S. Board would give me the opportunity to ensure that disabled students' voices are heard as well as the overall student body,” McClendon said. “If elected I will bring diversity and equitable representation to student government as I advocate for sustainability on the SMC campus.”

  • Veronica Lin is campaigning for A.S Director of Sustainability. In her community back in Taiwan, she successfully reduced 5% of rubbish. If elected, Lin’s goal is to make the student body more environmentally aware and successfully reduce carbon dioxide emissions at SMC. “I am excited for the upcoming year and hope to serve you here at SMC.”
