LAUSD Strike Reaches Third Day

Teachers and staff protest outside of Paul Revere Charter on Thursday, March 23, as the LAUSD strike reaches day three.

Teachers and school employees stood united in front of Paul Revere Charter Middle School on Thursday, March 23. It is the third and final day of the strike led by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 99. Classes are expected to resume Friday.

Steven Bilek, the chapter Chair for the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) at Paul Revere Charter Middle School, said that SEIU and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) are currently in the middle of negotiations.

“SEIU and the district are in what’s called fact finding. They’ve presented their proposals to the state, and the state is looking at them with a mediator,” he said. “The mediator is going to look at SEIU and go through all their information, and then go through the LAUSD … and then make a recommendation.”

Bilek said that teachers and staff will return to school tomorrow, and are “ready to teach again.”

LAUSD representatives declined to provide a statement regarding the state of negotiations.
