The Corsairs shut out the Condors

The Santa Monica College (SMC) men’s soccer team faced the Oxnard College Condors on Friday, Oct. 3 at Corsair Stadium. The Corsairs came out on top after two 45 minute halves, securing the win 2-0. The game started off aggressive, with both teams attacking the ball.
The Corsairs offense was strong within the first half. Corsair defender J.R. Herrera scored the first point of the game with a sliding kick, bypassing the goalie who attempted to tackle the ball.
The second half of the game continued to be intense, with high tensions between the Corsairs and the Condors. The Condors received, which resulted in the Corsairs scoring their second goal. Forward Jefferson Parada from the Corsairs finished with a kick to the upper corner of the net, evading the Condors diving goalie.
Corsairs head coach Tim Pierce received a yellow card from the referees as well during the second half. Later, the Corsair coaches received a warning instead of a second yellow card, which would have resulted in the coach's ejection from the game.
The highlights of the game came from the Corsairs goalkeeper Greg Georgantellis, who blocked two penalty kick attempts in the second half. Georgantellis continued proving his dominance, keeping the Condors scoreless after diving to save another two kick attempts shortly after.
“I guessed left but the kicker did not kick the ball cleanly so I was able to block it,” said Georgantellis, referring to his first block on the Condors penalty kick. “But on the second penalty kick I could tell by his body language that he was going to go left so I went left and that’s how I was able to block it.”
The Corsairs next game will be held at L.A. Pierce College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.
