Corsairs defense dominates Renegades
The Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs men’s soccer team faced the Bakersfield College Renegades on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Corsair Stadium. The Corsairs have been hot going into the game on a nine-game win streak.
Leading into the game, Corsairs’ head coach Tim Pierce said, “Our offense has been pretty hot lately, so focusing a little more on defense. We've done a pretty darn good job throughout the season, and really we’re trying to lock in defensively and try to keep some clean sheets.” The Corsairs shut out their last two opponents and are looking to continue the streak.
The Corsairs' defense was tested early on in the game. The Renegades’ offense was dominant in attacking the goal. Corsairs goalie Diego Barillas Paredes was up to the task, blocking all five shot attempts. Daniel Loff Fernandes and Bladimir Coto, two defenders for the Corsairs also aided in holding off the Renegades offensive attacks. The first half ended in a tie with neither team successfully scoring a point.
There was a change in momentum for the Corsairs after halftime, as they began pushing for points offensively. Osvaldo Escobedo kicked off the scoring for the Corsairs at the start of the half. In the middle of the half, Miguel Cano, scored the Corsairs’ second goal. The Renegades showed little signs of offense with almost no attempts on goal. With a few minutes left to go in the match, Santiago Veizaga scored the third and final goal for the Corsairs.The final score ended 3-0, extending the Corsairs’ win streak to 10 games.
The next game for the Corsairs is against College of the Canyons at Cougar Stadium on Friday, Oct. 24, at 6pm.
