9/11 Memorials Around Us

Sept. 11, 2025 - Following the tragic events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, numerous memorial sites have been constructed across the U.S. Los Angeles is home to at least four of these sites, in Rosemead, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, and Elysian Park. Each site features a piece of steel beam from the remnants of the World Trade Center, honoring and remembering those who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Tanya Kane and Rachael Callaway, tourists from Melbourne, Australia, stopped by the Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden to see the twisted steel. They previously visited the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, and their next stop was Chicago, flying out of Los Angeles the next day on September 11.
In addition to the permanent memorials, each year Pepperdine University plants over 3,000 flags on the hills of Malibu to commemorate the lives that were lost. The “Waves of Flags” installation was started by students in 2008.
David Ferrugio, a visitor of the installation on Sept.11, 2025, had heard about it from a friend. It was Ferrugio's first time seeing the display, and he shared that his father, David Frances Ferrugio, worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and perished on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower.
