Santa Monica Corsairs Football continue winning streak








Key player for the Corsairs was quarterback (QB) Dylan Moreno who scored two touchdowns throughout the first and second quarter of the game. His first completion was a 3-yard touchdown and the second within the second quarter being a 5-yard rush inside. With 49 seconds remaining in the first quarter, wide receiver (WR) Brandon Stafford picked up a pass from Moreno for a 53-yard touchdown for the Corsairs.
Sophomore kicker Jaiden Espadas from the Corsairs started out unsuccessful with his first kick attempt, but completed all extra points for the night. The Corsairs dominated the first half, finishing 20-0.
The Monarchs pushed for points in the third quarter but remained to get shut down by the Corsairs’ defensive linebackers (LB) Tyler Handfordand and Sherif Djato. With three minutes left on the clock, the Monarchs Kyle Smith carried his first touchdown of the game to bring the score 20-7 with a 45-yard pass completion from QB Austin Morville. Continuing during the Monarchs' possession after driving 68 yards, Morville threw an 18-yard touchdown to WR Calix Jameson. The Corsairs continued to lead 20-14.
With 11 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, Monarchs Morville threw an interception to Corsair defensive back (DB) Emma Russell. During the play, Monarchs WR Joshua Hephzilbah-Evan sustained a spine injury trying to complete a tackle. Players took a knee and said prayers until the paramedics arrived to escort Hephzilbah-Evan off of the field.
After a 30-minute delay, Moreno threw a 50- yard touchdown to Corsairs’ Dylan Childs to continue the lead 27-14. The Corsairs completed one final touchdown before ending the game as Monarchs Morville threw his second interception. This time DB Jason Anderson returned into the Corsairs end zone for 100-yards. The Corsairs won the game 34-14.
Santa Monica College Corsairs’ next game will be their Homecoming game on Oct. 9. at Corsair Field at 6p.m.
