SMC Announces Careers for Good Conference
On Oct. 23, 2026, the Interaction Design Program at SMC will host the first Careers for Good Conference. All participating companies are certified B Corps or agencies with shared values. The conference will include a variety of industries, as well as government offices like the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office.
Event organizer and Assistant Professor in the Design Technology Department Luke Johnson joined the B Local Los Angeles board in January, where he made connections with companies like MaCher. MaCher is a local B Corp specializing in promotional product design. There, Johnson first had the idea to connect value-minded companies with academia in a shared space.
“I’m spearheading this conference because not a lot of people know what a B Corporation is, and if you want to grow B Corporations, we need to reach out to students,” Johnson said.
B Local LA said B Corps are for-profit companies that have completed B Lab’s nonprofit certification process. Companies must meet rigorous standards for social and environmental performance, with accountability and transparency.
At the conference, students can attend a morning panel featuring recently hired students. They will share their experiences transitioning into their current jobs. Workshops on resumes, LinkedIn and networking will give students the chance to practice those skills.
Joan Kang, M.Ed. senior career services advisor at SMC, will be available to review resumes. Students will have an opportunity to have their resumes professionally reviewed.
“We are creating a safe space to network and meet really cool people,” Johnson said.
Students can connect prior to the event using the app Rendez.
The conference is free, and breakfast and lunch are included for those who RSVP.
