Third Street Shamrock
On Saturday, March 14, dozens of shamrock lovers filled Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
This free event brought out locals to socialize with the community. Festivities included children's activities, a photo booth, a bar crawl and live music by the band Shamrock Sean and The Irish Cabbage Band.
Patrick O’Brian, an employee of the City of Santa Monica and the designated Third Street leprechaun, said he was thrilled by the turnout. “On St. Patrick’s Day, everybody is a little bit Irish,” he said.
Originally from Cork, Ireland, O’brian shared some of his favorite traditions he keeps during this time of year.
“In my family, every St. Patrick's Day, my father would make corned beef and cabbage, which is a traditional Irish meal. Now, the way you make corned beef is really what matters. What he would do is take a really slow cooker and put the corned beef in there and cook it all day in Guinness with big thick peppercorns,” he said. “I will be eating that on Tuesday and going to Ye Old Kings Head in Santa Monica.”
The street was packed with groups of different ages, many of whom mentioned how exciting it was to come together and celebrate this holiday.
“‘As my friend would say, ‘the world needs a reason to have fun.’ The way the world is going right now, we need some love. We need to love every culture, every person and to me this is the way of celebrating,” said Michelle Gomez, who was out barhopping with a group of loved ones.
“It might not be us, but when we all come together, it's all love, family and at the heart of it we like to get drunk.”
