Performing for the Pier
On the Santa Monica Pier, street performers turn one of Los Angeles County’s busiest tourist destinations into a public stage. As visitors walk between the ocean, restaurants and amusement park rides, musicians and magicians use the open space to hold crowds’ attention and create brief shared moments.
Magician Jesse Mock drew visitors into his act with card tricks, coin tricks, cups-and-balls routines and quick audience interaction. “He is really funny,” an audience member said. “And his magic keeps people watching.”
In one performance, Mock invited a child to help with a cups-and-balls trick, producing several oranges and a small melon. Around him, other performers sang into microphones, played guitar and performed as visitors watched and enjoyed the sunset.
The pier’s performances highlight an aspect of Santa Monica that exists between tourism and local culture. The entertainers rely on timing, personality and audience engagement, while visitors respond with curiosity, laughter and participation.
Together, these small exchanges create a public space where strangers briefly gather, watch and connect with each other.
