Lady Corsairs remain undefeated at home

It's a Friday afternoon, and the sun is shining across Corsair Field as the Santa Monica College Lady Corsairs are warming up. The Lady Corsairs are preparing to take on the Mira Costa Lady Spartans. It is two o' clock and the girls look ready to go, the whistle sounds and the game begins.

The SMC Corsairs defeated the Mira Costa Spartans 2-0 win. The Corsairs remain undefeated at home on the season.

Santa Monica's defense stopped many goal attempts by Mira Costa in the first half. While the Corsairs missed a few attempts of their own they eventually took the lead when sophomore defender Victoria Scribner scored with just under three minutes left in the first half.

"It [the goal] was unexpected, surprising, and all because of Jesus," said Scribner.

After halftime, the Lady Corsairs sought to add another goal to their tally for extra insurance; which they found not too long after starting the second half. Only fifteen minutes into the second half, sophomore defender Elena Rust, scored the second goal of the game for the Corsairs, pushing their lead to 2-0.

After gaining a two goal lead over Mira Costa, it was clear that the Corsairs got a little too comfortable. Mira Costa was granted several good looks to score and get back in the game; however, they were not able to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.

Santa Monica College's head coach Aaron Benditson spoke about his teams comfortable play late in the game, "We need to do a little better after the second goal. We got a little complacent and we need to stay focused."

However, despite coach Benditson feeling his team needs to keep a high level of play consistently through the ninety minute game, he also mentioned how proud he was of the team. "You know, I am always telling them good things happen to honest and hardworking people, and yeah always proud."
