A display case of letters written by the famous women’s rights activist, Alice Stone Blackwell, attracted a small crowd of museum visitors on Thursday March 5, during the grand opening of the “All Is Possible: Women’s Suffrage in California” Exhibition at the Santa Monica History Museum. The exhibition is open in tandem with Women’s History Month and will run until June 6.

The passing of Laker legend Kobe Bryant on January 26, 2020 due to a helicopter accident has left the entire NBA community and the city of Los Angeles in disbelief, and pain even a few days after the incident. Kobe Bryant was able to bring joy to Los Angeles with his highlight reel dunks, and his five NBA titles. Thank You, Kobe.

On Oct. 26, 2019 people from all over Los Angeles came together to honor Terry Fox at the Santa Monica Terry Fox Run to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.

The Santa Monica Terry Fox Run is a 5km race that takes place annually on the Venice Boardwalk, right across from the Shutters Hotel.

Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete and cancer research advocate, who lost his leg in 1977 during his battle with bone cancer at the age of 18 years old. Terry Fox’s first hand battle with cancer inspired him to run the length of Canada, with a prosthetic leg, starting on the east coast in St. John, Newfoundland to raise money for cancer research in what he called the “Marathon of Hope.”

Campus safety speaks to more than campus-wide emergency situations or petty crimes like theft. It also includes issues like stalking, assault, and sexual battery. Among undergraduate students, 23.1 percent of females and 5.4 percent of males experience rape or sexual assault, according to the report by the American Association for Universities (AAU) “Report on Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct”, published in 2015. “Campus Sexual Violence Statistics”, a study done by the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network in 2016 shows that students are at the highest risk of sexual assault in the first few months of their first and second semesters in college. 

Pedestrians, visitors, and curious tourists all stopped by at the Santa Monica Pier on Friday, Oct. 4 to observe the 2nd-Annual Pacific Park Taco Eating Championship at 11 a.m. Under the bright sky of an ocean morning, championship eaters consumed as many two-ounce carnitas tacos that they could ingest in eight minutes. 

Indiecade, an independent video game festival, comes to SMC's CMD for the second year in a row. IndieCade Festival, an event showcasing independent games and their creators, will be occupying Santa Monica College’s (SMC) Center for Media and Design (CMD) for the second year in a row, from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12.

The Santa Monica College Corsairs Women’s Soccer team fell to the Santa Barbara Vaqueros 2-1 for their first loss of the 2019 season September 24, 2019. This loss also marked an end to a home game winning streak of two games.

Architect, artist and designer Candy Chang, alongside writer and graphic designer James A. Reeves, are responsible for creating the Annenberg Space for Photography’s first ever public art installation to hit the streets of Los Angeles. This installation was made up of three walls, which were located at different landmarks across the city. Each wall represented a different emotion.

Bikes, skateboards, and rollerblades cruised the shut-down streets of Downtown Santa Monica in celebration of the annual COAST Festival on Sunday, Sept. 15. The city closed sections of Ocean Avenue, Colorado Esplanade, and Main Street from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide a car-free space for people to ride freely.

Due to the limited food options near the CMD campus, many students rely on food trucks for their meals. The lack of sidewalks on Pennsylvania Avenue, however, pose a serious safety threat as it forces to pedestrians to walk on the street, putting themselves at danger of being struck by a vehicle.
