Best films of the year

2013 was overall a year where artistic vision and bold creativity outshone big budget, commercial fare. While "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Iron Man 3" raked in millions, the Summer was a disappointing plate offering remakes, reboots and expensive exercises. "Star Trek Into Darkness" and "Pacific Rim," two CGI spectacles, failed to meet expectations and other titles like "The Lone Ranger" simply crashed and burned. Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" was the only big budget studio project that could be said to bridge bold vision with commercially successful Hollywood filmmaking. As the year winds down, here are ten selections that stood out.
