A Steep Learning Curve

Women’s water polo takes a heavy loss as they build experience.

The Corsairs women’s water polo team faced one of the harshest defeats of the season on Thursday against the Citrus College Owls at the Santa Monica Swim Center. They lost 23-4

There wasn’t any one reason why the Corsairs struggled so much. The Owls swam faster, shot harder, and were more in control of their formations and penalty calls. But if there was one deciding factor, it was experience.

According to head coach Brian Eskridge, “We’re lacking a bit of experience on this team. We’ve got a lot of girls who are just starting out.” Eskridge believes that the loss itself is less important than the learning experience his players will have.

It’s certainly true that the Corsairs started to pick up in the later quarters. Early on, goalie Jean Guthrie was struggling to anticipate and block shots, but, later on in the game, she started to find a rhythm to be able to make the blocks that the team needed.

However, it was too little, too late, with the game ending 23- 4 in the Owls’ favor.

Their next home games are Friday against East Los Angeles College and Cypress College.
