Though students were scrambling for classes this winter semester, Santa Monica College still offered the largest winter semester in the state.

The Los Angeles and Long Beach area celebrated Fat Tuesday the Catholic celebration of music, dancing, eating and drinking before being restricted of these fun activities for Lent.

Each person has a different sense of truth."Santa Monica College English instructor and novelist, Christopher Meeks, gave a lecture for the last event in Literary Lecture Series for the fall semester at SMC last Tuesday entitled, "The Pursuit of Truth in Writing Fiction."

A $10 billion economic boost to California was implemented when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined federal, state, and local officials to outline the funding of the state's proposed high-speed train system.

In a time of slash-and-burn budget cuts, SMC's sustainable programs are still running strong. The success of current programs has encouraged exploration into other economically viable methods, with payoffs materializing through investment and culture change.

While every possible measure is being made to prevent it from happening, if there continues to be even a moderate increase in expenses in the immediate future, Santa Monica College's reserve fund could run dry as soon as 2011.

Santa Monica residents love their Priuses and other car companies have attempted to follow suit with their own brand of electric vehicles. Oil and alternative energy companies are therefore investing money to develop a surprising new fuel source compatible within the existing infrastructure. This source, made from algae, is the greenest fuel yet.

Last Tuesday, the University of California Regents approved a 32 percent increase in student fees.  The increase of $2500 rounds out the UC education fees to about $10,300.  This price does not include the approximate $16,000 students spend on room, board and books.

On November 17, TCBY/Starbucks, located at the north end of Santa Monica College's cafeteria, was announced as the college's first green business as designated by the Santa Monica Green Business Certification Program (SMGBC). 

The Los Angeles Mission on Skid Row continued its long-standing tradition of serving Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of people last Wednesday. Below are more photos on the event.

On Tuesday, SMC's Eco Action Club presented the fourth Annual Feast, focusing on a local food theme. Funded by the Associated Students, the club provided pizza, salad, and drinks free of charge to all attendees. Volunteers from Sustainable Works, a non-profit environmental organization, assisted in the event along with SMC's Club Grow.  

Colorful sweets such as Madeleines from France, baklava from Greece, oatmeal cookies from the United States and chocolates from Belgium covered tables on the Quad at Santa Monica College yesterday afternoon.

On a Monday afternoon, students at Santa Monica College exit classrooms and spill into the hallway. They sling their backpacks over one shoulder and talk with friends or rush ahead to their next class.

Last Wednesday, H1N1 (better known as Swine Flu) vaccines were administered at no charge to the public on campus at Santa Monica College.Lines began forming as early as 6:30 a.m. and many were turned down as the day progressed and supplies ran short.

When architect David Hertz began building his latest private housing project, The Federal Aviation Administration got involved. They told Hertz he needed to put giant red X's on the roof so that airplanes flying overhead would not mistake the house for a plane crash site. The house that Hertz built used to be a Boeing 747.
