On last Thursday, November 29, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) club hosted a presentation in Santa Monica College’s Math Complex about the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict given by activist Omar Zahzah.

Loud speakers blasted Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” into a sea of nurses flooding the sidewalk at St. John’s Health Center on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, in Santa Monica, California. They held picket signs reading “Nurses are the heart of patient care” and “Nurses demand a fair contract now.” 

On Monday, November 26, the Santa Monica College (SMC) Emeritus campus was evacuated in response to a fire emergency that occurred that afternoon. At 4:06 p.m., the Santa Monica College Police Department (SMCPD) received a phone call claiming a fire had erupted on the second floor of the SMC building, in downtown Santa Monica.

Over a thousand Central American migrants have made their way to Tijuana, Mexico after an on-foot journey from Honduras. A caravan of over two thousand people left Honduras on October 13 to flee poverty and violence, according to CBS News. Their plan was to travel through Guatemala and Mexico to eventually reach the United States to seek asylum.

The City of Malibu held a Malibu evacuee update meeting at Santa Monica High School’s Barnum Hall on the evening of Tuesday, November 12, in Santa Monica. This follows four days after the Woolsey Fire began destroying parts of Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, and Malibu, which led to over two-hundred and fifty thousand people having to evacuate their homes

On the bright and warm morning of Wednesday, November 15, hundreds of first responders gathered in the neighborhood of Westlake, California, to honor Ventura County Sheriff Sergeant Ron Helus, who was killed responding to the mass shooting at the BorderLine Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks on the night of November 7.

Running California Senatorial candidate Kevin de Leon lost the election against Senator Dianne Feinstein November 6. De Leon shared his election watch party along with other candidates at the Exchange LA in downtown Los Angeles.

Home owners from Thousand Oaks to Malibu, California, have felt the wrath of the Woolsey Fire as it has burned more than 97,000 acres and has been responsible for three fatalities and three firefighter injuries.

The air carried a subtle stench of smoke emanating from an ominous cloud over the hillside, while sporadic gusts of wind; a reminder of what caused this ordeal, continued to spread all three of California’s wild fires on the morning of November 9.

A mosaic of cultures and religions gathered together at Santa Monica College on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 12 p.m. for an interfaith vigil for the Tree of Life synagogue massacre victims. Regardless of creed, race or gender students gathered around a common message; “love overcomes hate.”

Last Thursday November 2 SMC held this semester’s Club Row, where dozens of clubs set up tables and stands to advertise and recruit. Starting around noon, there was an atmosphere of festivities, with music blaring, flags waving, and airbrush tattoos spraying onto people’s arms. 

“I want to cry because it’s very important. You know, what’s going on … I just know that something has got to change. If you guys want to have a good country, there’s got to be a lot of change going on.” These were the pleads of a very emotional Santa Monica resident, Patricia Olsen, after placing her ballot on the morning of Tuesday, November 6.

On October 25th, a man named Robert Bowers entered the Tree of Life, a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, shouting anti-Semitic slurs and wielding an assault rifle. Bowers killed 11 people. The massacre is one of the worse attacks against the Jewish community in the United States in decades- and arrives during the tail end of an exhausting political season. 

When limited to students at community colleges, 42 percent say they struggle to eat, 9 percent admitted to having gone at least one-day last month without eating, and a whopping 42 percent of community college students say they cannot afford housing.
