Riding With The Top Down (if that's allowed)
If you have ever been on a lonely road trip across the country, you realize having someone to share the ride can benefit your wallet and your sanity. Although hopping in a car with a complete stranger doesn't sound completely sane, there are some safe ways to avoid the sometimes axe slaughter ending.
We've Got Issues
Halloween is no longer a holiday focused on ghouls and gore. Today's Halloween is centered on skin, and the younger crowd has certainly noticed.
Parking Woes Trouble Students
Ten weeks into the semester and there is no difference in our parking situation. If you enter the lot between 7:40 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., you know you are going to have to wait before you find a spot. However, people still seem to complain about the tedious wait.
Rio Takes Home Gold
Not only was Rio picked as the venue of choice to host the 2016 Summer Olympic games, but also the U.S. was the first country booted out of the competition. Why oh why did they forsake us so?
Presidential Preservation
President Obama ran for office on a campaign which included drastic change to enviromental law. However, it seems that lately he has been moving at a snails pace.
The Battle For Minds, Hearts, Cholesterol
As you walk into the cafeteria the two main competitors to satisfy your hunger are Fresh and Natural, the old stand by, and Campus Kitchen, the new arrival at SMC. But which one to choose?
U.S. No Longer Has The Goods
As America recuperates from the economic disaster of 2008, reality needs to settle in. Capitalism as we know it, is over. The days of a booming housing market, low inflation, and a thriving dollar have passed because of the unfounded belief that the United States is still the pre-eminent economic world leader.
We've Got Issues
One of the major changes that occurred during the last political shift was the widespread growth and understanding of the American gay community. Though there have always been troubled spots, homosexuality has become a much more acceptable norm within our general society.
Animal Pharm Invasion
Maybe Swine Flu is a publicity stunt thrown by world leaders and supposed medical professionals to bring us all together and unify in fear of a common foe? Could be, who knows?
We've Got Issues
It's no secret that Santa Monica College lacks social protocol. Rude Manners are running rampant; time for an etiquette update.
A Snow Day In Washington
That Tuesday afternoon, the Senate Finance Committee voted 14-9 to move the final health care reform bill through the conservative panel. This bill comes in at under $900 billion dollars over ten years, being the least munificent in terms of providing for working and middle class Americans to afford health insurance.
Some Food For Thought
On Tuesday, October 5, 2009 a suicide bomber attacked the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Islamabad, Pakistan. As a result, five people were killed, all Pakistani WFP workers, and at least six people were injured.
People Are Stupid; Throw Rocks At Them
The increase of insanity with customers can be attributed to their dwindling amount of money in their bank account. This is understandable considering people look for the best deal or little pieces of sanity after their long workday. However, this is not an excuse for people to treat other people like they are beneath you.
An Addiction of Agrarian Origin
When your Facebook friends statuses constantly update with findings of lost chocolate cows or celebrating the harvest of their sweet potato plant you coldly disregard it. When its 8:30 am, you're late to class and someone in your carpool gasps in remembrance "MY FARM", you shake your head in disapproval.
LaRouche supporters disappoint scores of STUDENTS & FACULTY
Quadrennial presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche has made the Obama/Hitler comparison a mainstay of his health care opposition on college campuses everywhere, even regrettably here at SMC. Granted, Mr. LaRouche, seven times a Democratic candidate for president, ex-con and a man who has been labeled everything from a Marxist to an anti-semite to a homphobe is no paradigm of sanity.
Parking is a B****!
The parking situation at SMC never seems to be under control. Trying to park a car in any of SMC's structures on the first day of the Fall Semester felt more like trying to park in any of 3rd Street Promenade's structures on Black Friday. And even still, in mid October, the parking ordeal is trying to park at the mall during the holiday shopping season. The difference is that instead of parking at the mall to spend money, we're parking at school, where we have already spent $85 just to be able to park.
A Hondurad Solutions
When the military disestablished control from Honduras' President Manuel Zelaya, it caused a ricochet of shockwaves throughout Central America and the world. The military furthered the humiliation of Zelaya and Honduras by banishing the president to Costa Rica. The military foolishly acted on impulse, resulting in a massive political scandal instead of letting the situation subside when Zelaya was up for election in January 2010.
POP! Goes The Taxes
When asked last month about a tax on soda during an interview with the magazine Men's Health, President Barrack Obama stated,"I actually think it's an idea that we should be exploring." He went on to state that too many children are drinking soda, and that he believes it is not the only factor in obesity, but that it is a big one.
It's A School Spirited Debate
"Where do you go to school" is a question I often dread when meeting new people. I always struggle to spit out "SMC" with downcast eyes and an I-know-I'm-a-failure shrug.
