The Santa Monica College (SMC) Table Tennis team’s journey in the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) ends in the Round of 16. They reached this far for the first time in the program’s 40-year history. They performed well in singles play, with one team member advancing to the quarterfinals. In doubles, the team advanced to the Round of 16.

The Santa Monica College (SMC) Corsairs Men’s Soccer team has a total of six athletes signing with four-year schools. In a span of three months, head coach Tim Pierce has announced six of his players, including captains Narcisco Cervantes and Cesar Oliva, have officially signed with universities.

I am not a confrontational person. I do, however, enjoy debate and sharing ideas, arguing about views of life, and dissecting what behavior is moral and what isn’t. People around my age generally agree with me on most things, particularly politics. Thus, I seek people older than I, who will challenge me in my thinking, resulting in a discourse more fruitful because we will disagree.

Los Angeles is the number one city polluted by ozone, according to the American Lung Association’s 2019 census which gave the city an F rating. NASA defines Ozone as a naturally occuring gas that forms in the upper part of the atmosphere, formed when oxygen atoms (O2) are split by sunlight and then combined into O3.

Skylight Books, one of the last independent brick and mortar retail stores in the Hollywood area, offers free events with author readings, and audience interaction almost daily. Supporting the literary arts and building an active community is one of Skylight's strongest points.  

May is Mental Health Awareness month. In honor of this, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) has organized its second-annual We Rise pop-up, which features an art gallery, film screenings, and workshops. 

A lone student, Ron, a Math major and former Israel Defense Force (IDF) soldier who opted to only use his first name leapt and danced with feverish energy waving an Israeli flag, sparking onlookers to join his celebratory dance for Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israeli Independence Day. He said, “I heard that they’re going to have the event here. And I was like ‘I got to come.’

The hubbub of conversation filling a dark theater in Santa Monica College (SMC) died out, replaced by the voice of sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, in a video of her speech at the December 2018 U.N. Climate Summit.

Abortion has always been a controversial topic in America. However, with the US recently forcing the UN Security Council to rewrite a resolution on sexual violence in wartime to essentially prohibit abortions, this is now forcing other countries to follow a pro-life stance; a stance that has no plan for the amount of issues that come with childbirth and care.

A man who stands a little too close, a wandering hand that "accidentally" brushes a woman's breasts, a lewd gesture, a crude remark – these are familiar scenes, ones experienced by countless women all over the world during their daily commute.

Volunteers for the Associated Students’ (A.S.) initiative to implement post-consumer composting on campus began holding their “pilot” event on Monday, May 13 in the Santa Monica College (SMC) cafeteria. The volunteers aimed to clarify common misconceptions about composting, and to persuade students to keep in mind whether their waste would be compostable.

The Swimming and Diving State Championships took place from May 2-4 at De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. In spite of injuries, Santa Monica College (SMC) placed seventh on the men's side. Matt Holt, who was the top-seeded swimmer in the mile event, was out with a concussion,

Santa Monica College (SMC) Sophomore and defender Jacqueline Montepeque has earned a scholarship to Kansas Wesleyan University. An early childhood education student, Montepeque is a back-to-back Western State Conference champion with the SMC Corsairs women’s soccer team.

Santa Monica College (SMC) soccer player Renee Escobar has received a full-ride scholarship to Cal State Dominguez Hills. As one of the older members of the team, Escobar didn’t anticipate being a great asset to the team. “I honestly never expect it,” said Escobar.
