Hong Kong has been torn apart by violent anti-government protests. Clouds of tear gas are a common sight. Television crews and photographers record shopping centers where pro-democracy demonstrators clash with riot police.

"Rhinoceros," a production directed by Santa Monica College (SMC) Theatre’s Terrin Adair-Lynch, made its debut Friday, Nov. 22 at the school's Main Stage. The play, written by Eugene Ionesco in 1959, focuses on the transformation of a normal town into something unrecognizable to itself.

On Thursday, Nov. 21, an international student who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of personal safety voiced his opinions on the current circumstances rocking Hong Kong, China, only to have his message censored and met with verbal attack.

 With the passing of the Education Debt Collection Practices Act in October, Santa Monica College (SMC) administrators are left with fewer options for collecting debt from students. According to SMC Vice President of Business and Administration Chris Bonvenuto, student bad debt has doubled over the last four years. 

In order to help Santa Monica College (SMC) students complete their finals without growling stomachs, there will be free food provided through “Fuel for Finals Week.” The Associated Students (A.S.) is paying for the food, and the Community and Academic Relations is coordinating the faculty and staff who are volunteering to serve the food.

The SMC Guitar Showcase is a biannual performance put on by students and professors, intended to exhibit the hard work of guitar students each semester. Many students who attend Santa Monica College (SMC) are first generation students. Being the first person in your immediate family to attend college can be an exciting yet overwhelming feeling for a student. The meaning of being a first-generation student is different for everyone. These students know and understand the struggles that their families have endured, and they strive to make their loved ones proud. On Nov. 5, SMC students had the opportunity to express their thoughts on being a first generation student through the school's First Generation Day.

Although a few clubs became official at the last Inter-Club Council meeting, systematic hurdles of the club induction process prevent many others from making it to the finish line.

Global Motion World Dance Company’s showcase on November 23 and 24 at the Broad's Stage portrayed pieces in over twelve different dance styles inspired by cultures from all around the world.

In February, LeBron James expressed his support for Colin Kaepernick by wearing a jacket with Kaepernick's number on it and spreading his message of fighting against the social injustice American minorities face. It was a small gesture but one that clearly pointed that James supports Kaepernick's cause. So it came as a shock when James criticized Houston Rockets General Manager, Daryl Morey, who did something similar by tweeting support for the Hong Kong protesters.

President Trump’s recent decision to pull all American forces out of northeast Syria hasn’t just abandoned our closest ally in the region, he has pumped new life into the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). A U.S. official recently told CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh that the campaign to defeat ISIS in Syria is “over for now,” saying ISIS “has a second lease on life with nearly 100,000 [fighters and their families] who will re-join their jihad.” ISIS has been made great again.

This year Santa Monica College (SMC) men’s water polo team falls to another hard season. Going 2-5 in conference, and 9-20 overall in the 2019-2020 season. The Corsairs went through a difficult season, trying to get over the hump, only having a couple of wins under their belt.
